Our Sustainability Ethos
From the moment Dorthe decided to turn her own skin problems into a quest for healthy bath and skin care for all, sustainability has been a cornerstone of the business. – before it was fashionable to talk about recycling and refill options and it became a buzz word.
For us, sustainability is about much more than recycling and choosing sensible packaging; at the forefront is sustaining good health. For people and the planet. Just because something is considered ‘good for the planet’ or ‘environmentally friendly’, does not necessarily mean it is good for your skin. We understand the difference.
OUR INGREDIENTS
As you would expect we are very careful with each ingredient we consider, test and add to our formulations – or not, if it doesn’t pass mustard. Absolutely none of the usual nasties such as foaming additives, colouring, SLS, SLES, ALS, MIT, parabens, fragrances, petrochemicals, silicones or other sulphates.
But at Sedbergh Soap we think this list is setting the bar low and just skimming the surface when it comes to sustaining healthy skin.
We go a step further and you will not find any perfume, herbal extracts, palm oil or salt fillers either. – Wait, what salt?
WHAT’S THE STORY ABOUT SALT?
Most people are unaware that the industry standard way to thickening a liquid bath or hair product is to add a saline solution. Sodium Chloride. The same goes for mainstream organic products where certified organic salt is added.
Sodium Chloride dries the skin, which does your skin no favours whatsoever and it is especially bad if you have dry skin or a skin condition like eczema or psoriasis.
So, of course, we don’t add salt fillers. We believe in more of the good stuff and nobody needs dry skin. We add a very small amount of sodium chloride, by law, as a preservative.
OUR RECYCLED PACKAGING
All of our packaging has been carefully considered to ensure that it not only looks beautiful but is 100% recyclable. We offer glass packaging, and our plastic bottles are made from Prevented Ocean Plastic™. POP for short – is recycled plastic collected from coastal areas at risk from ocean plastic pollution that don’t enjoy established recycling infrastructures. The Prevented Ocean Plastic™ programme provides a global recycling initiative to help tens of thousands of people worldwide earn a living, clean their coastlines and prevent ocean plastic. And all off the manufacturing to turn old plastic into new bottles, happens right here in Britain.
OUR REFILLABLE OPTIONS
We are proud of the fact that we were one of the first to introduce refillable products into the hospitality industry many years ago. Bulk bottles have always been taken back to be refilled, making sure each bottle has a long life – year not days. You will find refill options across all our home, soap, skin and body care products.
We are currently looking into the viability of adding biodegradable refill pouches to our ranges.
